When life gives you lemons…

or in this case, when social media shows you a fashion garment you want, but you cannot afford. What do you do? Well, you can save as much as you can until you can purchase said garment. Or, you can figure out how to make the garment yourself- and that, dear readers, is how you make lemonade.

A DIY project does not solely consist of creating knock-off garments, there is also a genre of DIY projects based on creativity. Maximalism is that of art, performance, and spectacle. Further, the concept of maximalism is to create a look of uniqueness and creativity.

So, do not put down the arts and crafts. Rather, turn it towards your fashion sense, and utilize your creativity to express your own individual style.

Now I cannot take all the credit for learning to love a DIY project. My grandma has helped me out greatly with lots of my projects and continues to do so. She is the one who taught me how to hand sew, so while I do love a good DIY, I am limited to those that I can do by hand sewing (unless I am with my grandma and can pass off all the hard work on her hahaha).

Let’s talk about some of my DIY fashion projects

I originally was inspired by a pair of Love Shack Fancy jeans that were VERY bespoke and only retailed in select stores. Then, I was inspired by an Urban Outfitters pair of jeans that retailed $299.00 (jaw was on the floor with that number ya’ll). So, I took matters into my own hands..

I bought a new pair of jeans from Target for $28 (mainly because I specifically wanted low rise and I did not own any), then I bought fabric and lace ribbon at Hobby Lobby for a grand total of $11, and used thread that I already had to sew the bows onto the jeans. If this were a game of golf, between $39 or $299, the winner would be the former.

These overalls are a collaboration with my grandma. Mainly because I cannot sew with a machine and she is so much faster (and better) at hand sewing than me. I wanted a unique pair of overalls that I could slip on in the spring/summer. However, I am the child of maximalism, so they had to be cool. I decided to patch them up, and I still have room for more patches to be added. What once was a pair of Aerie overalls, is now a rocking pair of cool, unique overalls that no one else has.

So, dear readers, I implore you to go out and try to find a project to work on to create your very own item of clothing. Make something uniquely yours. When life gives you a lemon (an idea), make yourself some lemonade (fulfill that ideation).

P.S. Grandma, I have more patches I need help sewing onto my overalls!
